Called to Serve

Sometimes I have heard people at church say they prayed about a calling and felt impressed not to accept it. I have been concerned about this thought process. I believe in personal revelation, but I also believe that our leaders are called of God and that to sustain them we should accept callings. I have been trying to reconcile these ideas that might not always match up. I know that our leaders are human and so imperfect in their ability to receive the revelations to fill callings, but still I kept feeling there was something else to consider. Finally, I was impressed with the idea that if we have the desire to serve God then we are called to the work. (Alma 30:9, D&C 4:3)
I decided that no matter what calling I receive I will sustain my leaders by accepting it and trust that the Lord will help me serve Him wherever I am called. Because I have a desire to serve Him I am called to the work, it doesn't matter what the work is and I know that I can learn from each calling I have.
I don't mean to judge those who choose differently, though. It's impossible to know what is going on in each individuals life that may make them choose to not accept a calling. I have felt that it was a sad thing for people to feel so much guilt over refusing callings, but then so much anxiety about fulfilling that calling that they end up not attending church. Maybe some people are sustaining their leaders by being honest about their limitations at that time in their life. I think, like giving to the poor (Mosiah 4:24), those who choose to not serve in a particular calling may be feeling they "give not because they have not". They may have a desire to serve at church too, but at that time in their life they just don't have anything left to give. We must increase our love and service to those who feel that they cannot accept callings to nourish and strengthen them in the gospel of Christ.
